Curator
There are strong parallels between my visual work and my work as an exhibition curator. Both are developed along thematic lines. As is true for my drawing and painting, the projects I curate lean towards political or social themes. I like to work with artists whose work unites visual power and a rich concept. The theme or subject must create a framework and must be clearly defined. I find it important that due attention be paid to communication, both for the work and for the exhibition as a whole.
I ask artists to use the theme as their starting point and to see it as their source of inspiration. These themes are reflected in the exhibition titles.
A good curator keeps track, supports and serves. Inside a larger network, he or she is at the centre of the web, stimulating, inspiring and facilitating, making it all possible.
I produce two kinds of exhibitions. As an artist curator, I initiate projects on themes from my own work, for which I invite other artists to exhibit together with me. I also organize exhibitions as an independent curator, projects that do not include my own work. For three consecutive seasons, until July 2007, I was responsible for the exhibitions at the Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen, Centre for Contemporary Art (NL). link>
Exceptional exhibitions and projects create a framework. They also create an inspiring environment.
